United 500-Mile Purchase Upgrade Terms and Conditions
Valid Carrier: This upgrade may be used only on flights operated by United Airlines and not on flights operated by other airlines (such as United-marketed code share or Star Alliance flights).
Valid Routing: To take advantage of this upgrade you must be traveling within Region 1 which includes North America, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Central America.
Upgradeable Fares: This upgrade may be used on United Business (C, D) and United Economy (Y, B, M, H, Q, V, W, S, L, T, K) in Region 1, except when the terms and conditions of sale state that the fare is not eligible for upgrades.
Some internet sites, such as Priceline and Hotwire, issue tickets that are not upgradeable. Please check with your internet site for terms and conditions.
Non-Upgradeable Fares: This upgrade may not be used on any booking class not specifically listed as upgradeable fares, or on any Mileage Plus® award ticket.
Mileage Plus Accrual: The Mileage Plus miles you earn are based on the class of service you purchase, not your upgraded class of service.
Ticketing: Ticket must be issued in the purchased United Economy or United Business class fare. Your ticket will not be reissued using this Upgrade.
Request Upgrade: The upgraded United First or United Business (NF/NC) booking class of service may be requested after the ticket is issued in the purchased United Economy or United Business class fare. If available, the upgraded class will be confirmed as designated below and you may request a seat assignment. The upgraded NF/NC booking class may not always be available on all flights or on all days of the week when you travel.
Upgrade Processing: This upgrade will be processed based on the availability of capacity-controlled seating at the designated times determined by the Mileage Plus status of the traveler. 1K – 100 hours, Premier Executive – 72 hours, Premier – 48 hours, All others – 24 hours. All times are before scheduled flight departure.
Upgrade Rules: Multiple certificates or awards may not be combined to obtain a two-cabin upgrade. For flights that stop en route, the upgrade is only permitted when the upgraded seating is available on all portions of the flight.
Changes/Refunds: The rules of the fare you purchase determine what changes or refunds are allowed. Check with United Airlines or your travel professional.
Companion: Upgrade is not transferable, but may be used to upgrade one traveling companion to the same class of service following the same guidelines. Additional upgrade certificate(s) will be required.
Other Important Notes: This upgrade may only be used to upgrade one person. Other restrictions may apply. Upgrade has no cash value. Expiration dates will not be extended. Void if sold or bartered. Other restrictions may apply.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT YOUR 500-MILE UPGRADES

  • United E-Upgrades SM will be deposited into your account shortly after you qualify for or purchase them.
  • United E-Upgrades will be deducted from your account automatically using the oldest upgrades first.
  • United E-Upgrades are valid for one year from the date they are added to your account.
  • United E-Upgrade expiration schedule appears on your paper summary and on your summary at united.com.
  • When expired, United E-Upgrades are automatically converted to miles in your account (500 miles for each 500-Mile E-Upgrade).
  • Purchased United E-Upgrades will be held in your account with the same terms and conditions.
  • Advise booking agent that you are using 500-Mile Upgrades.
  • Prices subject to change without notice. Lower prices for Premier members only.
